En Albanie, beaucoup de jeunes parlent anglais et un peu d'italien. Mais dès que tu sors des hôtels touristiques de Tirana ou que tu commandes un café dans un quartier local, quelques phrases d'albanais font une différence énorme. Voici les 30 plus utiles, classées par situation.

Important : en Albanie, secouer la tête de gauche à droite peut vouloir dire « oui », et hocher de haut en bas peut signifier « non ». C'est l'inverse du français. Pas systématique, mais ça arrive — surtout chez les personnes plus âgées et dans le sud. En cas de doute, dis po ou jo à voix haute.

Le trajet de l'aéroport Rinas vers le centre de Tirana coûte environ 2 500 lekë (~25 €) en taxi officiel. Les chauffeurs essaient souvent de négocier un prix fixe au lieu du compteur. Demander sportelin (le compteur) marque un signal de voyageur informé.

Bon à savoir : la monnaie est le lek (pluriel : lekë). 1 € ≈ 100 lekë, ce qui simplifie les calculs. Beaucoup de commerces acceptent l'euro, mais le taux est rarement avantageux. Retire des lekë dans un distributeur pour économiser.

Conseils pour utiliser ces phrases

Ne lis pas en albanais comme en français

Quelques rappels essentiels : q se prononce tch, j se prononce y, y se prononce u. Si tu prononces à la française, personne ne comprendra.

Sors quelques mots dès le premier contact

Même mal prononcés, dire përshëndetje et faleminderit ouvre des portes. Les Albanais sont extrêmement réceptifs aux étrangers qui tentent leur langue, même très partiellement.

Garde une app sur ton téléphone

Une app de phrases hors-ligne te sauve dans 90% des situations. Tu peux montrer la phrase à ton interlocuteur si la prononciation ne passe pas. Shqip fonctionne hors-ligne dès que tu l'as ouverte une fois — pratique en zone rurale ou en montagne.

Et si tu vas au Kosovo ?

Toutes ces phrases marchent à Pristina, Prizren ou Pejë. Tu noteras juste que les Kosovars utilisent tungjatjeta à la place de përshëndetje, et qu'ils prononcent les mots avec moins de ë (mir au lieu de mirë). Tu seras compris dans tous les cas.

In Albania, many younger people speak English and some Italian. But the moment you step out of Tirana's tourist hotels or order a coffee in a local neighborhood, a few Albanian phrases make an enormous difference. Here are the 30 most useful, sorted by situation.

Important: in Albania, shaking your head side to side can mean "yes", and nodding up and down can mean "no". The opposite of most Western cultures. Not systematic, but it happens — especially among older people and in the south. When in doubt, say po or jo out loud.

A taxi from Rinas Airport to central Tirana costs about 2,500 lekë (~€25) with an official taxi. Drivers often try to negotiate a fixed price instead of using the meter. Asking for sportelin (the meter) signals you're an informed traveler.

Good to know: the currency is the lek (plural: lekë). €1 ≈ 100 lekë, which makes mental math easy. Many shops accept euros, but the rate is rarely good. Withdraw lekë from an ATM to save.

Tips for using these phrases

Don't read Albanian like English

Quick reminders: q sounds like ch, j sounds like y, y sounds like German ü. Read it like English and no one will understand.

Try a few words from the very first contact

Even poorly pronounced, saying përshëndetje and faleminderit opens doors. Albanians are extremely receptive to foreigners attempting their language, even partially.

Keep an app on your phone

A phrase app saves you in 90% of situations. You can show the phrase to your conversation partner if pronunciation doesn't land. Shqip works offline once opened — handy in rural or mountain areas.

And if you're going to Kosovo?

All these phrases work in Pristina, Prizren, or Pejë. You'll just notice that Kosovars use tungjatjeta instead of përshëndetje, and pronounce words with fewer ë sounds (mir instead of mirë). You'll be understood either way.
